Back in the Saddle

Ric Flair stands proudly in the ring in Japan in May of 1984 after regaining the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Kerry Von Erich.

They call Kerry Von Erich the 'Pride of Texas', huh? Well, I've never worn a pair of blue jeans, never wore a cowboy hat, never wore a pair of cowboy boots in my life. But there isn't a woman in the state of Texas that doesn't call Ric Flair 'the all around cowboy.'"     - Ric Flair

Jack Brisco defends against Dory Funk, Jr. in Japan (with Sam Muchnick)

A classic 2-of-3 falls contest in Japan in January of 1974 between reigning NWA World Champion Jack Brisco and former champion Dory Funk, Jr. from Japan. The video includes great pre-match footage of NWA President Sam Muchnick with Jack's brand new NWA World Championship belt, the original "ten pounds of gold" on the red velvet strap.

"Handsome" Harley Race with Pure Gold

This image is of a poster from a Japanese magazine in 1977, not long after Race won the NWA title in Toronto from Terry Funk. Most of the Japanese magazines featured really nice photography and fold out or centerfold posters.

One of the tell-tale signs that dates this photo is the condition of the belt. It is the third configuration, or version, of the domed-globe belt.

Not long before Funk dropped the title to Race, the NWA had the title belt refurbished. It had taken an awful beeating during Funk's reign. The globe had been badly dented and much of the black paint on the belt had come off.

The key identifier that this was the third configuration of the belt was that Canada is to the left of the main plate, the only version of the four to have that distinction. (In fact, Canada was in a different position on all four versions of the belt.)

Other notable identifiers on the belt in this picture peg it to early-mid 1977:
  • cream-colored fabric backing on the leather
  • black onyx panels replacing the black-painted areas on either side of the main plate
  • new globe (with curved "NWA" letters)

Not long after Race won the title in 1977, one additional refurbishment took place. The leather was replaced (with a slightly different cut) and the creme-colored fabric backing on the belt (seen in this photo) was removed, leaving the leather on the back of the belt exposed. The fact that the cream-colored backing is visible in this photo means it was taken sometime in the months following Race's victory over Funk.

If little details like that interest you, check out my book on the domed globe belt titled Ten Pounds of Gold. Almost every possible detail is discussed in a chapter that outlines all four versions of the belt.

Red Velvet

The domed-globe belt was barely six months old in this screen-capture taken from video of an NWA title defense by Jack Brisco against Dory Funk, Jr. on January 29, 1974 in Japan.

The red velvet-covered leather strap was still on the belt at this point, but would soon come off and the belt would be reworked with a black leather strap (and no velvet fabric.) This is really a beautiful look at the new belt.

NWA President Sam Muchnick is seen at left.

Complete details on the evolution of the domed-globe belt through its four different versions from 1973-1986 can be found in the book Ten Pounds of Gold.

Late edit: The video of the Brisco/Funk match from Japan, including the footage of Sam Muchnick with the red velvet strapped belt, can be seen here.

The NWA's "Big Three" (Japan Magazine)

Thanks to Scottie Richardson at Wrestler Weekly for sending us this image of a classic Japanese magazine cover featuring the NWA champions from 1969-1976. This shot was taken in 1973 as part of a series of famous photos in a hallway at a show in Japan.

Featured are NWA World Heavyweight champion Jack Brisco (front) with NWA President Sam Muchnick (back center) flanked by former champions Dory Funk, Jr. (left) and Harley Race (right.)

Japanese NWA Wrestling Collage

The Japanese magazines still do an excellent job of remembering the old NWA champs. These are images from a special section of a recent magazine there that looked back at the history of the NWA World title and presented a special interview with Harley Race.

Japan Wrestling Stickers

Japanese magazines occasionally included sheets of stickers within their pages. This particular sticker sheet featured several U.S. stars including NWA world heavyweight champion Terry Funk wearing the "ten pounds of gold."

Others featured include Ricky Steamboat, Dick Slater, Bruno Sammartino, and Fritz Von Erich.

Champions Ric Flair and Jumbo Tsuruta

NWA champion Ric Flair and AWA champion Jumbo Tsuruta
(Verne Gagne is behind them left.)
Ric Flair and Jumbo Tsuruta's world title reigns overlapped in the spring of 1984. Tsuruta defeated Nick Bockwinkle for the AWA championship on 2/23/84 in Japan and lost the title three months later to Rick Martel on 5/13/84 in Minnesota.

Flair was NWA champion most of that time, losing the title briefly to Kerry Von Erich in Texas on 5/6/84 and regaining on 5/24/84 in Japan.

The photo above (from a Japanese magazine) was not taken in Japan, since Flair's only known appearance during that time (when he regained the the title from Von Erich) was roughly a week after Tsuruta lost the AWA title to Martel.

It was likely taken 3/10/84 in St. Louis, MO when Flair and Tsuruta were on the same card at the Kiel:

St. Louis, MO  3/10/84
NWA champion Ric Flair vs. King Kong Brody
Wahoo McDaniel vs. Harley Race (Indian Strap Match non-title)
Greg Gagne and Ted Oates vs. AWA champion Jumbo Tsuruta and Genichiro Tenyru
Blackjack Mulligan vs. Ox Baker
Kimala vs. Bulldog Bob Brown and Buck Zumhofe
Blackjack Lanza vs. Roger Kirby
Luke Graham vs. Jay Wolfe
Buzz Tyler and Ron Ritchie vs. The Grapplers

The two never had a NWA title vs. AWA title match. But it certainly was a busy few months for these two major championships in the spring of 1984.

More Great Pretenders

...pretenders to the throne, that is.

Last September (2012), we posted some cool photos of some great pro-wrestlers who came close to getting the ten pounds of gold, but in the end fell just a bit short. Each of those wrestlers were photographed holding the gold, and as we stated before, no doubt that some fans may have left the buildings that night thinking the title had changed hands.

We came across one more, thanks to our friend Brian Rogers, who found this photo of the famous Jumbo Tsuruta with the belt after a match with Harley Race in a Japanese wrestling magazine.

Tommy "Jumbo" Tsuruta

Don't miss the other pictures that we featured in that post last September, including Bruiser Brody, Mr. Wrestling II, Wahoo McDaniel, Jerry Lawler, and Buddy Landel. (Great Pretenders)

I know there have to be more photos like this out there. If you have a photo similar to these of someone who came close to winning the NWA title (1973-1986) and want to forward it to us, please do so using the mail link on the Mid-Atlantic Gateway or send to us via Facebook.

Japan's Legendary Giant Baba

Giant Baba defeated Jack Brisco for the NWA title on December 2, 1974 in Kagoshima, Japan. It was the first of three short reigns Baba would have with the NWA championship.

You can quickly identify that this was the title he won from Brisco (as opposed to the latter two from Harley Race) because of the way the belt looked, the true tale-tell being the white lettering on a black background above the country flags on the belt. The "Ten Pounds of Gold" book details all those small indicators that identify the version of the belt, which underwent four distinct transitions over its life from 1973-1986.

Thanks to Eddie Cheslock for forwarding this photo to us.

Flair vs Steamboat in Japan 1982

One of the classic Flair/Steamboat matches was their battle in Japan on June 4, 1982. Flair was in the middle of his first reign as NWA world heavyweight champion.

I love the way the NWA belt was treated with such respect in Japan, and how "over" it was with the fans. In the video of this match the crowd has the wonderful reaction when Flair opens his robe and when the All Japan Wrestling official holds the belt up for display before the match.

And the match was another masterpiece between the two, who had more classic matches over a 17 year period than you can count.

Edit: We originally linked to the video of this match on YouTube, but that video has subsequently been removed.

NWA Champ Kerry Von Erich in Florida

When Kerry Von Erich won the NWA world title in 1984, he fulfilled the appearance contracts of the previous champion Ric Flair, which included dates in the state of Florida for Championship Wrestling from Florida.

The magazine from Japan seen below features a photo on the cover taken during that Florida tour of Kerry sporting the Ten Pounds of Gold with Florida heavyweight champion Billy Jack Haynes.
